One of the first symptoms that an air filter may need replacing is a reduction in fuel mileage. A dirty air filter with dust and debris decreases the airflow causing the fuel to become too rich lowering your gas mileage and putting unnecessary stress on the engine. Check engine light may also come on due a rich mixture.
